In or around Keswick and short on time? Looking for a short, challenging run with a stunning view as a reward? Head up Latrigg.

At 1,207ft, it is one of the lowest fells in the Lake District but is very popular due to its convenient location. The summit is a lot less rocky than the neighbouring fells in the Skiddaw massif which Latrigg forms part of.

I had two routes planned and depending on terrain and time I could easily switch between the two. The initial climb through a wooded area is fairly steep and heads around towards the rear of Latrigg as it levels off. Always looking over my shoulder as I ascended I knew I was in for a treat once I’d reached the summit.

At the rear of Latrigg a path begins zig-zag ascent up and around towards the summit. This section is steep but if you love hills that it’s runnable all the way. As I headed up I passed walkers ascending and runners descending just proving how popular it is.

I was fortunate to have chosen a stunning day for a run so at the summit I was rewarded with a panoramic view of Keswick and Derwent Water. Even on an overcast day the view would be breathtaking but with the sun shining it’s even more jaw-dropping.

I attempted to follow my original route but due to a landslip, the path that went through a wooded area was blocked off so I had to improvise and headed down the opposite side of Latrigg and back around via a car park used by this wanting quick access to the summit and for those scaling Skiddaw.

The path eventually reaches the zig-zag path and the original path that quickly descends down to the start. The route was only 4.5 miles but you could use the loop to scale the summit again and build up miles.
