Cottrell Park Christmas Cracker 10K

A relatively new race, this is only the second year that the Cottrell Park Christmas Cracker 10K has been run. There is also a spring version of the race which uses the same route. It was going to be the first of two 10K races in a row with the Forest of Dean Christmas Tree Race the following day.

The Route

Starting and finishing outside the clubhouse, the route takes in nearly the entirety of the golf course (watch out for those golf balls!) along with a wooded section on the outskirts.

Predominantly off road with the odd tarmac section, the route is very much like a cross country and allows you to maintain good speed. The wooded section has a very fast (fun!) downhill section and the hilltastic Bunker Hill (there’s a prize for the quickest up this segment on Strava).

SportzMad did an excellent job of marshalling the course and it was a chipped event which meant accurate timing, and results straight after the race. The excellent photographer from San Domenico RRC (Jonathan Lam) did a great job of shooting the race by taking literally thousands of photographs.

Result

Slightly tough (what races aren’t), I overall felt good and maintained a decent pace throughout. I crossed the line in just under 46 minutes finishing in 14th place out of 240 starters. I was delighted with the result and like usual made the mistake of not starting at the front. I wouldn’t have gained too much time but I would have had the chance of moving up a space or two.
